Why give ?

April 21, 2010

I was speaking with my brother Kevin the other day. He told me he saw my video tutorials and that they were pretty good but I shouldn’t tell my secrets. I laughed for a second because that is such an old way of thinking.

Why would I not share how I do something? Is it because they my duplicate exactly what I do and take business away from me? Yeah that may happen but they are not stealing business from me but creating new business for themself.

I am only giving them the tools to create. In this business there are a thousand solutions for one problem. There are a thousand different designers with the solution to the problem of creating a flyer, business card, website, or logo.

Not everyone will have the time or the passion to follow through with creating that marketing piece. Hey, they may not want to invest the money to buy the tools to achieve the desired results. Even if they do they may not have the passion to continue.

In that case they will be looking for a designer that they know who can do the job. Hopefully they will remember the great tutorials and valuable information that I gave away for free, and call me up to do some work.

In the end people remember you for what you give. People are honored for what they are given not what you keep or take in. That is only the by product of giving. Thats why I choose to give as much as I can. Hopefully you all enjoy the tutorials that I have provided on this site and I have developed a tutorial E-course that you can have for free. Designer and Client Relationship

March 25, 2010

Over the past couple of projects it has been pressed upon me time and time again on how special the relationship is between the designer and client. You would think that after doing X amount of flyers/ logos/ websites etc. I could get burned out with creative ideas. Well not so, the reason is because I am not creating from my own inspiration but from the clients.

The client is actually doing the creating of the flyer / logo/ or website. Therefore it is important for the client to have a good idea or direction the project needs to go. I find that if the client has no idea of which direction they want the project to go then they do one of two things.

1 They spend more money then they really wanted. This is done by having multiple revisions and redo’s or hoping from one designer to another. Although some artist charge by the job remember if you burn them the first time around good luck with trying to work with them again. They will remember how much time and effort was put in for the little compensation.

2 The client get up set with the artist because they are not seeing what they want. Its pretty much a lose lose situation for the client. to remedy this issue your graphic artist should always recieve some type of creative brief from you. This creative brief should outline what you are looking to receive as an end result. If the creative brief is open ended expect your project to be open ended.

An example of a creative brief can be found here PDF file.

Although designers and artist are creative they have to listen and internalize what the client wants. Writing your thoughts on paper for the designer will make it plain and concrete.

So, when you are looking to hire a designer/ graphic artist make sure they are really listening to what you are looking to have as an end result. If they don’t have you fill out a creative brief I would second guess that artist.

Well thats all that was on my heart this week.

Next week I will be back to creating tutorials for photoshop and illustrator. Next week I will create a tutorial on how to create reflections. If you would like to receive the tutorial as soon as I post it please sign up for the email list.

Keep Creating…:)

Work Work and More Work

March 18, 2010

It has been a while since I posted something new. Ever since the beginning of this year (2010) I have been extremely busy with side projects. I thought I would share some of the projects that I have worked on over the past couple of weeks.

I have done flyers, banners, motion graphics, websites, and logos. Some are still in process but I thought I would share with you all and see what you think.

check out  :

This was window treatmeants for the new place of worship for Labourers For Christ. This is on the inside of the building.

This is window treatments on the outside of the building.

This was a flyer done for the introduction of a name change from Pentacost Word of Faith to New Life Experience Christian Center. The logo was also another project.

I did this project over a couple of months time during my spare time. A portrait of my lovely daughter.

This was a flyer done for a conference in GA. Multiple versions but this was a good selection by Family Restoration which I also dd the logo.

Last but not least a flyer/ ad that I did for Tykielah promoting her lovely parfaits. I would like to highlight the logo was also created by me.  This is one of my prized projects because I also had the previlidge of creating the labels. I pretty much had a big say in how everything looked on this product given that my wife is the owner. lol. …You can also visit the website I created by clicking on the link

Please let me know what you think of the work.

Cropping with the Pen tool

December 13, 2009

As you all know, there are many ways of  to achieve an end result. You can use the lasso tools, or marque tools to make selections in an image. One accurate way to crop/select an item in an image is to use the pen tool. As I have stated before the pen tool can be difficult at first but with a little practice is a great tool.

First open the image in photoshop.

Then select the pen tool

Begin tracing around the object with the pen tool.

Close up the pen tool selection by connecting your start location and the end location. Then right click with your mouse with the pen tool over the drawn line. Choose make selection. Radius: to 2 antialias: on and select ok.

Under select go to save selection give it a name and say ok. If you save the selection you can reload this outline in the future.

Select your marque tool and then select the refine button. The refine button allows you to control the selection a bit tighter with feathering and smoothing on the edge.

These are the basics of using the pen tool. Hope you can use this in your creations and master pieces.
