1.Tells us some background information, your education, what you do, how long you’ve been doing it?

WELL I’M A NATIVE DETROITER REPRESENTIN’ THE EAST SIDE GRATIOT AND VAN DYKE AREA. I’VE ALWAYS BEEN THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT COULD GET ALONG WITH ANYONE INCLUDING MYSELF. I AM AN ALL AROUND ARTIST I DRAW, I PAINT, I CAN KNIT, AND FREAK OUT A FLYER OR TWO. WHEN IT COMES TO ART I NEVER SAY NEVER BECAUSE I THINK I CAN DO WHATEVER I PUT MY MIND TO. I GRADUATED FROM KETTERING HIGH SCHOOL THEN GRADUATED FROM EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY. i’VE BEEN DRAWING SINCE I WAS 5 YEARS OLD. I GET IT FROM MY FATHER, A MAN I NEVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING. I GOT INTO FLYER DESIGNING WHEN I WAS WORKING AT THE MAIN POST OFFICE ON FORT STREET. YES FLYERMAN WAS CREATED INSIDE THE P.O.! I STARTED DOING FLYERS
BEFORE PHOTOSHOP GOT BIG. YES IT WAS ALL ABOUT CLIP-ART AND ASTROBRIGHT PAPER.

2.What made you become an artist/designer?

MY DREAM IS TO BECOME A FULLTIME WRITER FOR FILM AND TV WHICH IS WHY I TOOK MYSELF TO EASTERN MICHIGAN. NOTE I SAID MY DREAM IS. WELL WHILE TAKING TV AND FILM CLASSES I STILL MAINTAINED MY ART SKILLS DOING FLYERS BY HAND FOR THE QUES, KAPPAS AND SIGMAS AT EMU. EVERYONE SUGGESTED I TAKE UP ART CLASSES SO I WENT AHEAD AND GOT ME A SECOND MINOR IN GRAPHIC DESIGN.

3.In the beginning of your career how did you market yourself?

WORKING IN THE POST OFFICE I CAME UP WITH AN IDEA TO DESIGN FLYERS BECAUSE THE BULLENTIN BOARDS AT WORK WERE FULL OF HORRIBLE FLYERS. I WAS LIKE I’LL BE THE MAN WHO HOOKS UO THE FLYERS. I’LL BE FLYERMAN. SO I STARTED COMING UP WITH CLEVER FLYERS TO POST ON THE BULLENTIN BOARDS INSIDE THAT LITTLE CITY INSIDE THE POST OFFICE TO PROMOTE MYSELF AND BEFORE LONG EVERYONE WAS COMING TO ME FOR FLYERS. I WAS COOL WITH THE PEOPLE AT KINKOS ON WOODWARD AND WARREN AND I GOT MY PRINTING THROUGH THEM. I WAS UP THERE SO MUCH WE WERE KNOWN AS THE KINKOIDS!

4.What tools do you use, software and hardware?

I USE PHOTOSHOP, THE OLD TYPESTYLER AND THAT’S IT! WHEN I DRAW I JUST FREEHAND MY CARTOON CHARACTERS AND COLOR THEM IN PHOTOSHOP. I USE TO USE MARKERS LIKE CRAZY, BUT I HAVEN’T TOUCH A MARKER IN YEARS. I’M IN THE PROCESS OF GOING BACK TO CLASS TO LEARN DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING, DREAMWEAVER AND FLASH. YOU CAN NEVER STOP LEARNING NEW STUFF TO UPGRADE YOUR SKILLS.

5.How do you manage the business side?

IT’S TOUGH AT TIMES TRYING TO DO THE FLYERS, RUN A MAGAZINE, PARTY PROMOTE, BE DADDY AND MAINTAIN A LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK.
SINCE LEAVING MY BASEMENT AND MOVING MY BUSINESS ON WEST MCNICHOLS BUSINESS HAS PICKED UP. I LOVE THE FACT THAT I’M MAKING MONEY OF SOMETHING I LOVE, BUT IT HAS IT’S MOMENTS WHEN I WANNA STOMP MY COMPUTER. I BIGGEST PROBLEM IS GETTING ORGANIZED. ONCE I GET THAT TOGETHER THINGS WILL RUN SMOOTHLY. THEN I CAN START HELPING OUT OTHER STRIVING BLACK ARTIST OUT HERE.

6.where and how do you get inspiration to design?

WELL I LOVE BEING CREATIVE AND I LOOK AT EACH FLYER AS AN INDIVIDUAL PIECE OF ART. I TRY TO PUT OUT GOOD WORK WITH WHAT IS PROVIDED TO ME. ALSO SOME PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO REPRESENT YOURSELF WITH GOOD ART. PRESENTATION IS THE KEY. SO QUIT BEING CHEAP AND PAY FOR QUALITY NOT QUANTITY. I LIKE THE FACT THAT PEOPLE TRUST ME WITH THEIR LAYOUT BECAUSE THEY KNOW I DO GOOD WORK.

7.what is some advice you can give to people just starting out?

DON’T SIT BACK AND KEEP YOUR ART TO YOURSELF. SHOW THE WORLD WHAT YOU CAN DO AND WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER. ART IS FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY AND GET INSPIRATION FROM. SO IF YOU GOT SOME POEMS, OR STORIES, OR DRAWINGS YOU CREATED FOR YOUR OWN SATISFACTION GIVE OTHER PEOPLE A CHANCE TO ENJOY THEM TOO. YOU WILL GET A BETTER SATISTACTION FROM SEEING OTHER PEOPLE LOVE WHAT YOU CREATED. REMEMBER YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE AND YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CRITICISM, BUT YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT PEOPLE THINK IF YOU KEEP IT TO YOURSELF.

Thank you for taking the time to share.
